Just today, I was looking through some past chapters I had written, and encountered a character describing her future as "iffy." Hmm. Better look that up. Nope. Wasn't in use till the 1930s. My book is set in 1913. So "iffy" is gone.

Martin, pardon my whining, but you have to hear this. I just got scammed by a vanity press to the tune of $5,700. As a first-time author, I bought into all their slick marketing lies about Amazon PPC optimization and press releases and social media exposure. My focus is always on story. My desire to just hand it over to a "professional" overrode my critical thinking. They appeared so sincere. It wasn't until after I paid for their package that the red flags popped up. Oh, they scammed me good. At this point, I'm still in shock. I'm disputing payment, of course, but my confidence is so shaken that I don't know how to proceed. My 95k manuscript is ready, but I'm overwhelmed with trying to figure out self-publishing. Media is not my thing. I still want to hand it off. And then there's this feeling of devastation and bitterness. These people took advantage of a hope and dream that is sacred to me. How do criminals like this exist? Thanks for your video. Any advice or words of encouragement is greater appreciated.

I was hoping you could tell me. But you neglected one thing. Anything told in 1st p POV need not be the voice driven style. The narrator in my story is from her perspective, but not her direct thoughts, more her impressions, things one does not put in words. For example, an excerpt from an Indian restaurant (lacking the italics): ‘The butter chicken is being very popular, ma’am.’ [italics] Of course! Mama’s golden roasted chicken, silky, crispy skin, toasty new potatoes, creamy avocado. Oh, yeah! Who’d’ve thought; an illegal able to afford real food? [end italics] ‘Sounds great. Could you fix it like you do for family?’ Her right hand found itself at her neck, but all she could caress was a button. She took a deep breath, allowing the sizzling aroma of the bird to fill her head.

I was very defensive and felt underappreciated for all I put into my writing when receiving feedback. After returning to those critiques, months later, I realize how accurate they really were. Conclusion; before blame and defensiveness kick in, we should prepare ourselves for what we asked for. Never expect a 'love letter' from a Beta Reader or Critique Partner.

A trick that I've started using is to write my zero draft in a table, as if it's a spreadsheet and not a page to truly do _Writing_ on. In the cell on the left side I'll write admin info, like scene 2: the classroom. Then in the right hand cell I'll write out everything that happens there, as granularly as I can. It's, like you said, halfway between an outline and a draft. I don't bother thinking of pretty words unless they come to me right away. I don't bother capitalizing characters' names. I use bullet points. I tell and tell and tell and don't bother showing. I'll write [they flirt awkwardly] and have the character leave the room so I can move on. Sometimes I'll even critique myself in writing so I KNOW what I've written is dumb and that I'm acknowledging it and not trying to tell myself it's good. I'll write something like LOL THIS IS SO DUMB right there in the draft. It feels good. Acknowledge it's terrible and move on, write _more_ terrible. Then, tomorrow when I'm in an editing mood, I'll make it sound better. But today isn't for that. Today is for shite. Everyone has their own process, but this works for me since my main issue is paralyzing myself with things like word choice and stalling for the whole session. I love the guy who write his zero draft under a different name like it has nothing to do with him lol.

My zero drafts are an amalgamation of all the things you mentioned: scene summaries, dialogue volleys without tags, some fully-crafted chapters. I find that they end up about 1/3 to 1/2 the finished first draft. I typically start with the premise and write a chapter or two so I can meet my characters and get to know the important aspects of their personalities and features. For example, I didn't know one of my side characters had a thick Savannah accent until I started writing the dialogue volley. After I meet the characters, I'll put down a loose thread of the story (I hate the term "outline") and make sure I have the required elements of a good story: inciting incident, Act I turn, midpoint, Act II turn (rock bottom), and climax confrontation. The resolution usually doesn't present itself until later. Then I go a start crafting the vital scenes/chapters. I found through trial and error that crafting the confrontation/climax is a good first move because you find what you need to include in earlier chapters so the action in the climax makes sense. Then I work on completing the first draft.

I use Dean Wesley Smith's "Writing into the Dark" process, ie. I pants, then outline.Which simply means after each scene I make a note on what I've written so at the end I can see the structure and adjust if needed. And, when I think about something I need to add I have no issue going back and putting in "the gun", so to speak. This is what he calls "cycling" and a lot of pro writers do it.

I read a thriller written in 19th century Prague a few years ago and one of the characters advised the other to forget an aristocratic woman he was infatuated with because "she was out of his league". I thought the writer definitely needs to be more aware that 19th century Czech men did not speak like high school students. As a whole the book was amateurish for this type of error plus others.

I just luv your hair and face and voice and the advice you share. The Ancient World….. the novel universe……. I have no words, yet I have endless endless thousands. I cannot describe the magnificence and magnitude of it. The Ancient World, and all of its secondary stories. The Barbarians, The Wanter Chronicles, the Adventures of Bohn and Fellet, The Winds of a Thousand Rivers. But it starts with…. The Ancient World pt. I II & III. It cannot come any sooner than when it is meant to be given and shared to the world. My gosh. My gosh. Its magnificence is indescribable. Been in development for 22 years. Some say that is a sign of D.O.A, but my heart and soul knows…… it’s going to become of the best marinated novels to come out in decades. I never gave up or stopped developing and learning and improving my skills. Now I’m 31 and have this massive universe and endless stories and plot points and characters, and I don’t even have to look at anything because I have been engraving the universe into my soul and brain since I was 9 years old. I am confident and secure and feel smart enough to have begun assembling all the pieces and I have been a follower of Reedsy for gosh many years and am thankful for all the sage and thought shared. The Ancient World, but not only, the universe and many other stories of The Ancient World.
